Established in 1974 by Congress the Big Cypress National Reserve was the first National Preserve to be established in the National Park System. This 720,566-acre popular family getaway preserve from Miami is located in Southwest Florida and the preserve offers numerous recreational opportunities to its visitors and it draws almost half a million visitors per year. Big Cypress has a mixture of pines, hardwoods, prairies, mangrove forests, cypress strands and domes. The visitors will see a lot of wildlife here which includes white-tailed deer, bear and Florida panther, endangered West Indian manatee, eastern indigo snake, and American alligator. Visitors can also enjoy recreational activities like camping, canoeing, kayaking, hiking and birdwatching inside the park.
