Everglades is the Florida Peninsula from Lake Okeechobee to the southern coastline which is covered by a vast marsh and varied flora and fauna. It is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States and was created to protect a fragile ecosystem and also for safeguarding a unique geographic feature. The Everglades is often called the "sea of grass". The Everglades National Park encompasses sawgrass marshes, hardwood hammocks, mangrove swamps, lakes, and Florida Bay. It is know for its animal life including the famous alligators, Florida panther, West Indian manatee and the largest concentration of wading birds on the American continent, and 14 threatened or endangered species.
