The world renowned Mesa Verde National Park is regarded as a national treasure and is listed by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site. It is famous for cliff dwellings and has got the distinction of being Americas only National Park that shields man-made structures. The most amazing highlight of this park is its 4,000 odd historic ruins which lie in the hilly, inaccessible country south of Cortez. Most of these ruins are built under steep, overhanging cliffs in narrow canyons. In its vicinity of the park lies some of the important ancient sites like Canyon de Chelly, Chaco, Aztec Ruins and Hovenweep.
