Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is indeed an out of this world weekend getaway destination featuring huge petrified redwoods and fossils of ancient insects and plants. Almost 35 million years ago, this place was a lush valley featuring redwood trees, but due to enormous volcanic eruptions got buried and petrified. There are lots of recreational activities to indulge at this place from camping at the nearby campgrounds to hiking along the Phantom Creek Trail to finding solace at Wrights Reservoir and Coulson Lake.
